Over the last several weeks, our organizing committee had a small number of meetings with representatives of the administration to discuss a possible agreement to hold a fair union election for student workers here at Northeastern. Unfortunately, these representatives informed us today that the University has decided it will not negotiate an election agreement because “an election agreement is not in the best interest of the students of the university.”

We are deeply disappointed in this decision, since the administration is knowingly attempting to force us to put our fate in the hands of an anti-union, anti-education Trump labor board that is eager strip the rights of student workers to form a union. In short, their decision prevents a fair path to a union and to collective bargaining.

We had hoped the administration would join the growing number of Universities, including Brandeis and Tufts, that have agreed to respect the right of RAs and TAs to choose democratically whether to unionize and engage in collective bargaining. Northeastern has apparently decided for now that they know what is best for us. While this decision is disrespectful and disappointing, we are not going away and will continue our campaign until they agree to honor the value of the work we do here and respect our choice to unionize. By standing together, we raise each others voices until we must be heard. It is critical the administration sees our support for our union.
