Dear Graduate Students:
I shared in my communication to you on July 21, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has ruled that graduate students who performed research or teaching services over the prior year are eligible to vote in an election this September 19, 20 and 21 on whether to elect the United Autoworkers as their union. As part of this process, the NLRB has issued a subpoena of your contact information that it intends to share with the United Autoworkers Union. The NLRB denied the university’s request that this personal information not be disclosed because it is protected by the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
We will now be required to comply with the NLRB subpoena, which requires disclosure of your information unless we are instructed not to do so by a court or agency empowered to issue that order.
Northeastern maintains strict policies to protect student information, and we regret that we are now required to disclose your information to the NLRB.
We encourage you to become informed about what it means to have a union and how it may impact your graduate student experience. Our webpage has FAQs and other relevant information that may be helpful.
If you have further questions, please email [email protected].
Regards,
David Madigan
Provost & Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
